Dame Sally Davies was appointed as the UK Government’s Special Envoy on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 2019. She is also the 40th Master of Trinity College, Cambridge University. Dame Sally was the Chief Medical Officer for England and Senior Medical Advisor to the UK Government from 2011-2019. She is a leading figure in global health, in November 2020, Dame Sally was announced as a member of the new UN Global Leaders Group on AMR, serving alongside Heads of State, Ministers and prominent figures from around the world to advocate for action on AMR.

Professor Hanan H. Balkhy is the first appointed Assistant Director-General for the Antimicrobial Resistance Division (AMR) at the World Health Organization (WHO). This is a flagship program for the WHO with a mandate to lead the human health response to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance along with the relevant stakeholders. Dr Balkhy is a Professor of Pediatric Infection Diseases with over two decades of experience in the field  of infectious diseases and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and as a clinician and a researcher.

Dr Janet Midega is a Senior Research Manager for Wellcome’s Drug Resistant Infections (DRI) programme where she is providing scientific leadership, program development and management support to the surveillance and epidemiology program on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). At Wellcome, she led the recently published work on the burden of AMR and continues to lead science and policy research.

Join Claudia Hammond and guests to discuss one of the biggest public health challenges of our time: antimicrobial resistance. What can we do as disease-causing bacteria and viruses stop responding to treatment and drug-resistant infections increase?

Claudia will present the programme and interview the speakers. Then the audience will have the chance to ask questions. You can participate or just listen in. 

The event will be recorded live with an audience and edited into a programme to be broadcast on the BBC World Service. Some of the speakers will join the discussion by live audio link. After broadcast, episodes of 'The Evidence' are available on the BBC website.
